New Physical Therapy Clinic Open
January 2013 As seen in Sauk Valley Media's Daily Gazette
STERLING, ILLINOIS - A new physical therapy clinic wants to help you with that pain in your neck.
Sauk Valley Physical Therapy opened December 17 in the new building in Sterling Commons shopping center. Physical therapist Donnie Early is seeing patients 2 days a week at the clinic, and expects to extend the hours when need dictates.
![]() |
"I feel we have a lot to offer the area," Early said.
The clinic can see clients with 1 or 2 days' notice, spokeswoman Meghan Wilinski said.
That promptness can make a real difference, Early said.
"If you have surgery, and you don't get therapy for a week or 2, you're going to stiffen up, so it's important to get therapy in soon," he said.
The clinic, Byron-based Orthopedic and Sports Therapy Institute's seventh, is the first to open in the new building, which is intended to house up to four businesses.
Early, 31, of Grand Detour, provides pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation. The clinic offers work-injury prevention programs to businesses, and treats those who have suffered workplace injuries.
Early can provide a pre-employment screen for a company to ensure that a potential employee can perfrom the work. He also can customize physical therapy for a current employee so the therapy will be geared toward what that client does during work hours, he said.
Early described his physical therapy style as "hands on."
"I like to make sure patients are stretching the right way," he said.
Early sees clients of all ages, as long as they have a doctor's prescription for physical therapy. He treats clients with sports-related injuries, back pain, shoulder injuries, or other needs.
Early is certified in ASTYM, a method or regenerating muscles or tendons and removing scar tissue. The treatment is used for tendinitis, joint problems or carpal tunnel syndrome, he said.
The clinic also can provide orthotics, which are inserts put in shoes for support.
The clinic has numerous pieces of equipment, such as a shuttle press for working legs or arms; an exercise bike that can work arms or legs; a Bosu, which can provide an unstable surface for improving one's balance; and steps that can be adjusted to simulate bus steps.
Early received a master's degree in physical therapy in 2005 from Maryville University in St. Louis. He has 6 years of experience as a physical therapist, including 2 years at KSB Hospital.
Early and his wife, Annette Early, have a 17-month-old daughter, Brenna

| Kim Girton, ATC, BS |
John Cain, ATC, BS, CSCS |
The FMS screen provides a standardized approach to assessing fundamental movement, identifying limitations and asymmetries. The concept behind FMS is in order to maximize the body’s performance potential, the whole body must be functioning properly. If there are weak functional elements of the body, this weakens performance of the body and increases the likelihood of a potential injury.
The FMS screen is a standardized test which is comprised of seven motions. Individuals will be given a score based on his or her performance of each motion. Progress and motion patterns will be monitored and recorded over time to track improvement. The screen itself takes anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes.
The FMS screen is beneficial for athletes of all backgrounds or individuals looking to get into shape. The system helps individuals attain long term fitness levels, improve functional fitness and athletic performance, establish a starting point for realistic goals, and identify and resolve movement problems. Organizations such as the NFL Combine, German National Team, US Military and professional athletes in the NFL, NHL, and MLB utilize the screening progress.

Orthopedic and Sports Therapy Institute Opens Poplar Grove Location
June 2010

POPLAR GROVE — It has, if you will, that new-gym smell. Fresh pine under the parallel bars, shiny new stability balls, medicine balls, wobble boards and Bosu balls.
![]() |
Poplar Grove Physical Therapy, a 3,750-square-foot facility at 13524 Julie Drive in the Countryside Square center off Illinois 76, opened today as the sixth location of the Orthopedic and Sports Therapy Institute, which began business as Belvidere Physical Therapy in 1998.
"Our company has been blessed to be able to expand during the current economic landscape," Orthopedic and Sports Therapy Institute owner Jon Link said. "Most of our clinics are in underserved areas or in areas where there aren't a whole lot of physical therapy clinics, but all of our clinics stay really busy from the standpoint of trying to do a good job for our patients and keeping our therapists up to date on the latest and most innovative techniques."
Link said the company's success in Belvidere and the expanding population of the Poplar Grove, Caledonia and Candlewick Lake areas figured in the decision to open the new clinic.
"Our referrals come from hospitals, primary care physicians and orthopedic groups, so it makes a difference if you can go into a growing area," Link said. "The patient has the ability to choose their provider. A lot of them aren't aware of that, but it's important. If you live, for example, in Poplar Grove, and you have to go for therapy three times a week. You may want to take into consideration that you don't want to drive into Rockford that many times."
The new clinic will be staffed by physical therapist Kathleen Murphy who, Link said, grew up in Caledonia.
The company employs 40 people, including 18 physical therapists and therapists' assistants and six certified athletic trainers who work with high schools in the areas of its clinics. Its other clinics are at 1686 Henry Luckow Lane in Belvidere, 212 Lindow Lane in Marengo, 406 N. Front St. in McHenry, 404 W. Blackhawk Drive in Byron and 5003 Hononegah Road in Roscoe.
"Even though we started out in Belvidere, we've never gone toward Rockford," Link said. "It will have to be the right environment for us to do that, because there is a lot of competition in Rockford. We want to make sure that when we do a Rockford location, it's well thought out and definitely serving the needs of the community."
"If anything, we might look at something on the west side of Rockford, something out of the box, just because again I think it would be a need in an underserved community."
