Lori Gulsrud-Neiber, PTKathleen Newhouse, PT, DPTSteve Merema, PT, DPT, CKTPOrthopedic and Sports Therapy Institute (OSTI) therapists Lori Gulsrud-Neiber, PT of Belvidere Physical Therapy, Kathleen Newhouse, PT, DPT of Poplar Grove Physical Therapy and Steve Merema, PT, DPT, CKTP of Ogle County Physical Therapy attended a course on total joint arthroplasty.

Arthroplasty is an orthopedic surgical procedure where the surface of a bone or cartilage of a musculoskeletal joint is replaced, remodeled or realigned.

The course covered various surgical approaches for the total hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasties.  Course participants also learned about the latest post-operative precautions, restrictions and possible complications from surgery.

Lower and upper extremity functional tests were presented in order to provide a way to measure a patient's progress from the start to the finish of physical therapy. These tests address daily functional activities that a person might have difficulty with following a surgery.

The content from the course has given the therapists a better understanding of the various surgical aspects of the total joint arthroplasty and how to evaluate these patients more thoroughly. Topics also included post operative stretching and protocols as well as manual therapy techniques which will be beneficial when creating patient treatment programs.
